How do you feel today? Are you on top of the world? Are you gloomy? Are you happy? Do you know why you feel as you do? More importantly, do you know how to change your mood for the better when you feel glum?
What Is Happiness?
Happiness is difficult to define or to describe because happiness means different things to different people. It also means different things to you on different days and at different stages of your life.
When you think about happiness you will know that you feel happy when nice things happen. When you get a pay rise, you will probably feel happy. When you buy those shoes you have fallen in love with, you will probably feel happy. Perhaps you will also feel happy when you are in the company of someone special.
You may not always be able to define what happiness is, but you definitely know when you are happy.
What Makes You Happy?
If you stop and try to work out what makes you happy, what you discover may surprise you. If you are used to looking outside yourself to find happiness and if you rely on others to help you to shape how you feel, you are in for a shock. That is because, in reality, you are the one who makes the decision about whether you are happy or not.
Other people do not make you happy – or unhappy. You are in control. You choose how you will react to other people and to situations you experience. Therefore, you choose whether to be happy or unhappy.
This is an important lesson to learn because you will almost certainly know some people who just never seem to be happy. They are always looking for new and exciting experiences. They are always looking for something they do not have. They do not know what they are searching for but they do not value what they have. The result is unhappiness that they seem unable to shake off.
You can avoid this situation. You can avoid the sort of unhappiness and dissatisfaction with life that you see in others. You can give yourself permission to do the things you know help you to feel content and satisfied with life. You can allow yourself to focus on what is good about the present and what is enjoyable about today. You can pay attention to the sun on a spring day or you can allow yourself to feel satisfied because you have done a job well.
You can also teach yourself to be happy by paying more attention to what is good in your life and in the world around you. You do not have to spend your time thinking about what is going wrong, what could be better and what you do not have. Look carefully at the world and you will see that there is plenty to be happy about.
Time To Be Happy
From today take control of your moods and your perceptions of the world. Enjoy your life. You really do deserve to be happy and you are the only one who can ensure you achieve the sort of happiness you are looking for. Therefore, it is time to be happy. You have no reason to be anything else.
