Franklin D Roosevelt said, ’The only thing we have to fear is fear itself’. But when you are a chronically anxious person, this doesn’t seem to be the most heartening advice. This is where lucid dreams can help in overcoming fear.
Fear prevents us from doing so much in life.
We miss out on having enriching new experiences and adventures.
We forgo the chance to grow and progress in our careers.
Ultimately, fear can stop us from reaching our true potential in all areas of our lives. It can be debilitating and is very often irrational.
But How can you Gain Control of Your Fear and Stop it from Ruling You?
Lucid dreams are one way to manage fears and phobias. In the last article, I talked about the Benefits of Lucid Dreaming, and how to do it.
Today, I will focus on overcoming the things that frighten you and that hold you back in life.
Control Your Dreams, Control Your Fears.
Once you have learned how to lucid dream and are doing it regularly, you can choose to observe specific things while you dream.
In your lucid dream state, visualise the thing that frightens you. Alternatively, you can visualise a symbol or shape that represents this thing.
Once you are exposed to this fearsome thing, you can walk up to it, challenge it and face it, safely, knowing that you are only dreaming so it cannot hurt you.
Reprogramme Your Brain with your Lucid Dreams
This process, even in a state of dreaming, will reprogramme your amygdala.
The amygdala is an almond-shaped part of the brain which controls fear and anxiety. It ‘remembers’ things it ought to fear and triggers the fight or flight response when faced with them.
It is often said that the best way to beat a fear is to face it. By doing this, you learn that it is not as scary as you imagined.
For many of us, doing this in real life is overwhelming or unrealistic. But in our dreams, we can do anything. Face your fears in your dreams and your amygdala will remind you not to be afraid in your waking life too.
What Kind of Fears can be Cured?
Rational fear is an important part of human psychology. It protects us from dangerous situations and foes. It is unrealistic to try and remove all fear from your mind.
However, irrational fears are what holds us back, cause high-stress levels and prevent us from living our best lives.
Common fears include public speaking, spiders, germs, social situations, animals, heights and flying.
In the vast majority of situations, these things are not going to hurt you. But your brain has been programmed to believe they will. This is often because of a past trauma involving this thing which you may even have forgotten all about.
It is possible to conquer your irrational fears and change your life for the better.
Learning to lucid dream takes practice, time and patience. You must train your mind daily to make it easier to become lucid when you are dreaming. But once you have mastered it, it will help you to take back control of your life. You will be happier, healthier and stronger.
