Do You Struggle to Believe in Yourself?
Do You Find Social Occasions an Effort?
You’re not alone. Life can feel like too much of an effort sometimes. Summoning the energy to face challenges can drain your already deleted resources, making you feel that there’s no point. Life’s many challenges can set you back, knock you down and prevent you from achieving your goals. Whether it’s not getting the promotion you set your heart on, your work not being appreciated, or having to present at a conference, your confidence and self-esteem can take a beating. You can’t prevent life’s challenges, but there are things you can do that help. Follow these tips for positive mental health and how to build self-esteem to feel better about yourself.
Challenge Negative Thought Patterns
Constantly putting yourself down can cause you to spiral into deeper negativity. Criticising yourself is a habit, but it’s a habit that can be broken. When you recognise a negative thought, think about whether you would talk about a loved one in the same way. Try replacing it with something positive. The rule here is to be kind to yourself.
Be Kind to Others
When you’re feeling low, everyone around you seems comfortable in their own skin, but you’d be surprised. What people present to the outside world can hide deep-seated insecurities, so never assume anything. Being kind to another person makes them feel as though someone cares, but it also makes you feel good. When you’re caught up in the cycle of negative thinking, considering another person’s suffering can help change your pattern of thought. Try small acts of kindness and see what happens.
Connect with Those that Love You
Spending time with people who treat you badly or don’t appreciate you can have an impact on your self-esteem. Find a friend or a family member you trust and talk to them. Ask them what positive things they like about you. Talking about your fears and insecurities can help you put things into perspective and make you feel better about yourself.
Move Your Body
Shake things up by getting your body moving. An endorphin high lifts your mood and helps you focus. But this should be relative to what you normally do. If you’re quite an active person, try and exercise regularly. However, if you’re not very active, going for a walk can work wonders. Exercise can shift your perspective and clear your head, not to mention the vitamin D from the glorious sunshine. Move your body to free your mind.
Talk About It
Finally, find someone to talk to. Talking to someone who cares can help you work through acknowledge the causes of your low self-esteem. Talking to a professional can help with negative self-talk and support you in setting realistic goals to get you on track.
